Fed: 2020 summit opens with welcome to country =3
Maj-Gen Jeffery asked delegates to question the "fundamental fabric of our society".
"Can we do more to strengthen the family unit, to reduce the very high incidence of
family break-up, to better prepare young people for adulthood and to strengthen their
sense of social responsibility?" he said.
Great ideas had been created in the past, Maj-Gen Jeffery said, pointing to the Royal
Flying Doctor Service and the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
"As I move around this country I am constantly struck by the ingenuity, innovation
and creativity of our fellow Australians in so many fields of endeavour."
In closing, Maj-Gen Jeffery urged the 1,000 summit delegates to bring their ideas "in
an open and constructive manner and with a spirit of collegiality".
